It was a great idea but I don't think we'll be able to get the wires setup for it tomorrow. The problem is getting an internet connection to the section of the room we need. Hopefully we'll be able to try something like this next year or at the regionals.

The Derby and the Weather

It looks like Friday we will be having some typical New England weather and this has a chance to impact our plans for the annual Pinewood Derby.

Thursday night we'll assemble the track after 7pm (I have a commitment and won't be there till about then, Bryan is not feeling well)
Friday is normally when we get the track ready for the next day but this week it may be difficult to get there, also we have fun with movie night in the evening. This is usually the night most people check in their cars. If the conditions are not optimal we will not be meeting there in the evening, I will post a notice here on the blog.
If we can't do weigh-in on Friday I'll need any adults available to be at the church as early as possible on Saturday morning, we'll get the cars checked in and ready for the noon racing. Matt Milbrant and myself will be probably be making sure the track is ready so it is critical we have additional adults to check-in the cars.

Pinewood Derby 1-22-11

The time is nearly here for the Annual Pinewood Derby, a very exciting time for our pack. Here's the info you need on the race and events leading up to it.

January 19th starting at 6:00 we'll be doing some initial weigh-ins. This is the night to come check out your car, make sure it's close on weight and clearance.
January 20th at about 6:30 we'll be assembling the track, we'll be looking for adults to help because the track hasn't gotten lighter over the years. If we have volunteers I'd like to have a table for check-ins also.
January 21st at 6:30pm we'll be having our annual pre-race movie night, we will be testing the track and doing final check-ins for cars. After this, we will not be checking-in cars so this is the time.
January 22nd is the day, we'll open the doors to scouts at 11am when they will have their chance to vote for best car in the various classes. Racing will begin at noon and usually goes till about 3pm.

Some important points

Scouts are expected to stay till then end to help cleanup, the more help we have the faster it goes.
Cars will be checked in on the 21st as the latest, this allows us to stage them for judging. There is a lot of things going on the 22nd, we won't be able to do last minute check-in.
The Masons will be once again be sharing our event with their CT-CHIP program, please stop by with your children to take advantage of it, for details: http://ctchip.org/index.php/about.html
We're going to try something new this year, live streaming of the event if possible. The URL will be http://www.ustream.tv/channel/pack-61-pinewood-derby we hope to use it so you can share the excitement of the Derby with those that can't attend.

This Fall's Rocket Day will be held at J.B. Williams Park at 12pm on October 17th. There will be a cost of $5 per scout's rocket, each rocket will be launched twice depending on the condition after the first launch.

We're looking for a few parents to help setup rockets for launch.

Parents are encouraged to bring digital cameras and video equipment, if possible to share pictures so they can be posted at this site.

Join, Rejoining and our first meeting of the new session

This September we welcome back returning scouts and introduce ourselves to our future friends.

On September 15th we'll have our joining night where new scouts can sign up and our returning scouts can check in and pay their dues for the year. This will be held in Charrier Hall from 6pm until 7pm

On September 17th we'll have our first pack meeting of the 2010-2011 session. Scouts should attend this in uniform for our meeting in Charrier hall starting at 7pm till about 8pm.

Blue and Gold on Saturday the 27th!

If you have not heard, February 2010 is the 100th anniversary of the Boy Scouts. There are many celebrations for this all over the world, but Pack 61's celebration will be on 2/27 at SCC from 5-7:30. And it will be an awesome celebration, with cool decorations, great food and unforgettable entertainment. I hope that the scout and his family, and whoever else wants to come, will join everyone and just have a FUN night. Here are some details:

When - 2/27, 5PM
Where - SCC
Why - It's Scouting's birthday!!!
Who - everyone you want to bring

The 'main' food will be provided by the Pack. It will be kid friendly food and a lot of it so come hungry.
Each Den will bring something to share and is as follows:

Side dish (ie green bean casserole, pasta salad, potato salad, etc) - Webelos 2, Webelos 1 and Tigers
Dessert - Bears and Wolves

The scout is FREE, 5 and under are free, 6-12 is $3.00 and 13 and up are $6. There max a family would pay is $18.00.

The entertainment this year is The Taboras (www.thetaboras.com). They incorporate magic with their mind blowing show SENSE. You will truly be amazed and leave asking "How did they do that?"

Please RSVP to me so we know how much food to buy and cook. ALL family members are welcome - cousins, grandparents, potential scouters, everyone!!

Movie night and final weigh-in 1-22-2010

Also we'll be doing the final check-out on the track and checking in any last minute cars.

Derby weigh-in nights next week

Reminder, we have the weigh-in nights on Tuesday January 19th & Thursday January 21st. Cars will be weighed and collected if they are ready. We will do a limited number of weigh-ins on Friday the 22nd but this is also movie night and the time we test the track so please do not wait till the last minute.

On Sunday, November 1st our charter organization, South Congregational Church will be having a fall cleanup event.

Please join us to help out starting between 11:15 - 11:30, bring rakes, leaf blowers, tarps, gloves, etc. Scouts please wear your shirts to as we do a good turn for our community. Lunch will be served afterwards!

Online Popcorn orders, so easy even a Committe Chairman can do it

I hate to admit it, I didn't understand the change in the popcorn system that makes it considerably easier this year to do online sales. In past years a leader needed to login to the system and generate a code for each scout, not anymore.

The easy steps:
1) Go to Trails End, this is the link you need

2) Go down to the Create a new Account section, it looks like this

3) Setup an account for your scout, once you put in their age it will ask for Parent/Guardian info & e-mail.

4) On the next screen select: CONNECTICUT RIVERS Pack 0061 South Congregational Church

5) Final screen will ask for a little more info

And then you are done! Trails End will e-mail you a confirmation e-mail then you can sign in and e-mail from their system your friends and relatives.

Next Wolf Meeting 10-10

Our next Den activity will be at Goodwin School on Saturday, October 10, at 10:30 am. We will work on the first requirement on the Wolf trail so dress for outdoor activity. No uniforms necessary. Plan to spend an hour to ninety minutes for some outdoor fun!!

Thank you everyone who attended our Popcorn kickoff for returning scouts. We have goals and are excited to meet them.

1. Always wear you class “A” uniform.

2. Never sell alone or enter anyone’s home.

3. Practice the five principles for success presentation

a. Who you are? Use first name only
“Hi, my name is Joe”

b. Where you are from?
“I’m a Cub Scout with Pack 61 in East Hartford.”

c. What you are doing?
“We’re working very hard to try and help raise money for our scouting activities this year.”

d. What they can do to help you?
“You can help us by buying some of our delicious popcorn!”

e. Close the sale.
“You’ll help us, won’t you?”

4. Be polite and always say “Thank you”.

5. Always walk on the sidewalk and/or driveway.

6. Keep your Take Order forms each year for repeat customers.

7. Have Mom and/or Dad take an order form to work.

8. Plan how many sales you will need to reach your goal.

We are quickly approaching our popcorn fundraising time frame and we will be holding our first Popcorn Kickoff Meeting on Aug 27, 7PM SHARP at the church. At this meeting we will:

Review the Trails End popcorn website and how to order online

Explain the MANY ways scouts can earn prizes and gift cardssample some new products

Explain the goals for this year and show you the big, wet trip we plan on taking show and sell popcorn opportunities

GET EXCITED!!!!!!

June 26th we'll be having our first ever Pinewood Derby free-for-all night. The important info:

Pizza and drinks, $10 per family
Bring your cars from previous races or a new car
We'll race all the cars to find the fastest and if time permits we'll have a few grudge match races
Everyone will need to stick around to help break down the event and clean up.
Visitors and spectators are welcome, see the fun that pack 61 has in action.

Annual Strawberry Fair at South Congregational Church

On Saturday June 13th, South Congregational Church will be holding their anual Fair fund raiser. Cubmaster Brian Goh will be manning a table to raise funds for the scouts, Committee Chairman Scott Malin will be manning the grill. There are activies for the kids, crafts, a raffle, baked goods, hot grilled food, and delicious fresh made strawberry shortcake made of locally grown strawberries.

Every family has a story to two to tell, this learning opportunity could be used toward your Heritage belt loop or pin.

Belt Loop
Complete these three requirements:

Talk with members of your family about your family heritage: its history, traditions, and culture.
Make a poster that shows the origins of your ancestors. Share it with your den or other group.
Draw a family tree showing members of your family for three generations.

Academics Pin
Earn the Heritages belt loop, and complete five of the following requirements:

Participate in a pack heritage celebration in which Cub Scouts give presentations about their family heritage.
Attend a family reunion.
Correspond with a pen pal from another country. Find out how his or her heritage is different from yours.
Learn 20 words in a language other than your native language.
Interview a grandparent or other family elder about what it was like when he or she was growing up.
Work with a parent or adult partner to organize family photographs in a photo album.
Visit a genealogy library and talk with the librarian about how to trace family records.

Achievement: World Conservation Award

The World Conservation Award provides an opportunity for individual Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Varsity Scouts, and Venturers to "think globally" and "act locally" to preserve and improve our environment. This program is designed to make youth members aware that all nations are closely related through natural resources and that we are interdependent with our world environment.

The Cub Scout version of the World Conservation Award can be earned by Wolf or Bear Cub Scouts, and by Webelos Scouts.

As a Wolf Cub Scout, you can earn the Cub Scout World Conservation Award by doing the following:

Complete achievement #7 - Your Living World
Complete all Arrow Points in 2 of the following 3 Electives:
#13 - Birds
#15 - Grow Something
#19 - Fishing
Participate in a den or pack conservation project in addition to the above

As a Bear Cub Scout, you can earn the Cub Scout World Conservation Award by doing the following:

Webelos Scouts that earn the Art Belt Loop while a Webelos Scout also satisfy requirement 11 for the Artist Activity Badge.

Blue & Gold Banquet

On Feburary 21st we will celibrate the birthday of scouting with the Blue & Gold Banquet. The pack meeting will start at 5pm and dinner will be served around 6pm. Scouts and immediate families are free, additional tickets will be on sale for Adults - $8, Children under 12 - $4.

Blue and gold are the Cub Scout colors. They have special meaning, which the boys and leaders should understand, and will help them see beyond the fun of Cub Scouting to its ultimate goals.

Blue stands for truth and spirituality, steadfast loyalty, the sky above.
Gold stands for warm sunlight, good cheer, and happiness.

The weather outside is cold but we're going to heat things up with some Pinewood Derby action this month.

January 15th - Weigh-in night 6:30pm-7:30pm

January 23rd - Movie Night in Charrier Hall 6:30pm, Down-n-Derby! Popcorn will be served
January 24th - Pinewood Derby, doors open at 11am, races start at noon.

Derby notes:

All cars need to be weighed in at one of the weigh-in nights and will be stored until race. This allows us to get a count of the cars and display the cars for judging before the race. We will not have time to weigh-in any cars on the day of the race I'm afraid.
The Masons will be once again having a CT Chip event in the church library, this is a free service and we are encouraging people to spread the word. See http://www.ctchip.org/ for details on the program.

Tiger Den Activity on Sat. Dec. 13

As discussed at the last den meeting on Dec. 5, we were looking forward to a Go-See-It at the East Hartford Safety complex this month. Thanks to Dan Dube (and Cubmaster Bryan) we have a time set!

Tigers, please meet met at 11 am on Saturday, Dec. 13 at the Safety Complex on the corner of School Street and Tolland Tpke. Dan said to park in the little parking lot near the fire station bay doors. See you all there and in uniform!! Plan for about an hour for a tour of the building.

Since this is such a large den I will most likely ask Dan for another day in the spring for those that cannot make it this weekend.

Call me with any questions. Also, don't forget about the Den meeting this Friday, Dec. 12.

The Bobcat badge is the first rank earned by every boy in Cub Scouting. All boys will first work on their Bobcat badge to complete the Cub Scout joining requirements. All our new scouts this year need to complete their Bobcat badge.

To earn their badge they need to be follow the below steps.

Learn and say the Cub Scout Promise and complete the Honesty Character Connection.

Here is a Meteor guide for the remainder of 2008 as additional information to inspire us.

November 11 or 12, 2008 North Taurids
Like the South Taurids, this shower is long lasting (October 12 – December 2) but modest, and the peak number is forecast at 7 as well. Because the South and North Taurids overlap, there’s some chance of catching a few extra meteors per hour. In most years, you would see the maximum numbers at around 1 a.m., when Taurus the Bull rides high in the sky. Unfortunately, in 2008, the nearly full moon will wash most of these meteors from view.

November 17, 2008 Leonids
Historically, the Leonids have produced some of the greatest meteor storms in history, with rates as high as many thousands of meteors per hour. These storms often recur in cycles of 33 years. In 2008, we anticipate more of a whimper than a growl from Leo the Lion, with a maximum of perhaps 10-15 meteors per hour. Like the October Orionids, the Leonids produce swift-moving meteors, and tend to put out the greatest numbers just before dawn. The peak, however, on November 17, also features a large bright waning gibbous moon in the sky after midnight. Forget the Leonids this year, unless you are a serious meteor observer – or unless you happen to spot a few whizzing past in bright moonlight!

December 13, 2008 Geminids
The Geminids are often the year’s grand finale for meteor-watchers. As a general rule, it’s either the Geminids or the August Perseids that give us the most prolific meteor display of the year. The Geminids tend to intensify and climax at about 2 in the morning. With maximums commonly reaching 50 meteors per hour, this is a glorious time of year to sprawl out on your reclining lawn chair and to take in the show. Just be sure to bring along warm clothing, blankets or sleeping bags, and a thermos with a warm beverage. Unfortunately, there is a bright moon – only one day past full – for the 2008 Geminid shower. As a result, you probably won’t see very many Geminid meteors this year.

Tips for watching meteors
Here’s the first thing – the main thing – you need to know to become as proficient as the experts at watching meteors. That is, to watch meteors, you need a dark sky.

You also need to be looking at the right time. Meteor showers occur over a range of dates, as Earth moves through space, crossing “meteor streams.” These streams of icy particles in space come from comets moving in orbit around the sun. Comets are fragile icy bodies that litter their orbits with debris. When this cometary debris enters our atmosphere, it vaporizes due to friction with the air. If moonlight or city lights don’t obscure the view, we on Earth see the falling, vaporizing particles as meteors.

Although astronomers have tried to publish exact predictions in recent years, meteor showers remain notoriously unpredictable. Your best bet is to go outside at the times we suggest, and plan to spend at least an hour reclining comfortably while looking up at the sky.

In 2008, the moon gets in the way of quite a few of the year’s best showers. The most moon-free shower of the year will probably be the Perseids of August, and, even for the Perseids, you’ll have a narrow window for meteor-watching in the hours between moonset and dawn. This custom sunrise sunset calendar also includes moon phases and moon rise and set times.
Peak times are derived from data published in the Observer’s Handbook 2007 by the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada.

Great Escape popcorn challenge

Kurt, the Wolves leader, was able to get a prize for any scout that fills up 1 and 1/2 sheets. The prize is a reduced $2.00 admission to the Great Escape in Glastonbury, regular price is $6.95. If you have not been there, this is a BIG indoor playground that the kids will love. We will organize this and go as a group at a later date.

There are about 3 weeks left before we have to turn in our order forms. Besides the neighborhood, family and friends - here are some other places to try:

Help Wanted

We're looking for a few parents to round out the Pack 61 team:

Pack Secretary

Keep notes on business conducted at pack leaders' meetings. Record only key items such as things needing follow-up or items for the history of the pack.
Assist Cubmaster and Committee Chairman with correspondence for the pack.

Advancement coordinator

Collect den advancement reports at pack leaders' meetings for use when ordering badges and insignia from the local council service center.
Help plan induction and advancement recognition ceremonies.

In addition to these two important roles we need helpers for a few upcoming events

On October 26th we will be blasting off with our 2008-2009 session Rocket Day, we are going to need a few parents to assist in preparing the rockets for launch.
January 24th is our Pinewood derby and last year proved it's never too early to start planning. This year is going to be even better than the last and it's going to take a team to bring us there. At this stage we're looking for assistance with sponsor activities as well as event planning.
